In the book Native Son by Richard Wright, Bigger Thomas returns Mary Dalton to her home after a night of drinking. He puts Mary in her bed but then Mrs. Dalton, who is blind, walks into her room. Bigger didn't want Mary to talk and let Mrs. Dalton know that she was drunk so his reaction was to put a pillow on her face. Bigger was so scared that he didn't know that he was slowly killing her. When Mrs. Dalton left the room Bigger released his force from the pillow. What he saw was Mary's cold limp body. Many thoughts raced through his head on how to cover up the body. Since Mary was supposed to be gone for the next three days he decided to let her parents think that she died during her trip. What Bigger really did with the body was throw it in the furnace to burn it. The head didn't fit so he had to cut it off and throw it in the fire next to the body.
When i read this it made me feel different about Bigger Thomas. It made me think of him as being stupid because of how he suffocated Mary with the pillow. He could have just let Mary speak, it wasn't his fault that she was drunk. I felt that it was unnecessary for him to protect her because she hadn't done anything for him, she treated him as if he were a source for an assignment because of how she thought that he represented the whole black American society.
